UMBC is proud to be part of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program. As part of our commitment, we aim to educate our community about invisible disabilities and how we can all contribute to a more accessible environment. Faculty and staff are required to take the Sunflower Program Training to better understand and support individuals with hidden disabilities.
Steps to Complete the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program Training
This training provides an overview of invisible disabilities and actionable steps you can take to create a supportive environment at UMBC. Follow these simple steps to get started:
1. Access the Training Video
- Duration: The training videos are about 17-20 minutes long and can be accessed through Panopto.
- Objective: The videos provide an introduction to the Sunflower Program, discusses the importance of understanding hidden disabilities, and outlines how to use the Sunflower symbol as a tool for inclusion.
2. Enroll in the Course
- Join our myUMBC group “Sunflower Program” to access the link and enroll in the course.
- After enrolling, you’ll gain access to the training materials and additional resources offered by the Office of Student Disability Services (SDS).
3. Watch the Training Videos

You can wear the lanyard around your neck or place the symbol on your office door, reception area, or shared spaces.
- By displaying the symbol, you help foster a culture of empathy and accessibility across campus.
5. Share and Advocate
- Encourage your colleagues to take the training and participate in the Sunflower Program.
- Consider discussing the initiative in team meetings or departmental discussions to spread awareness.
Why Your Participation Matters
Living with a hidden disability can make daily life more challenging, especially when others don’t recognize or understand the difficulties. By completing this training and displaying the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower symbol, you:
- Create a more inclusive and supportive campus for all members of the UMBC community.
- Help normalize conversations about hidden disabilities and accessibility.
- Promote a culture of patience, empathy, and understanding.
